Planning your adventure elopement should be exciting, not stressful. Your wedding day can be built around the things you love doing together, whether that means hiking into the alpine at sunrise, exchanging vows beside a turquoise mountain lake, exploring a remote corner of the Rockies, or flying somewhere wild and impossibly beautiful by helicopter.

There are a few important details you’ll need to organize in advance, so I’ve put together an adventure elopement checklist to make the planning process easier. That way, you can spend less time worrying about logistics and more time looking forward to the adventure.

1. Choose a Location

If you’re reading this, then it’s likely you’re already thinking about Banff’s turquoise waters and towering mountain peaks as the backdrop of your forever. But there are lots of incredible location options, and after 6 years of exploring deep into the backcountry in Banff, Kananaskis, Yoho, and Jasper, I can confidently say that helping you choose the perfect location is the best part of my job. From easily accessible mountain viewpoints to remote alpine locations, there are incredible options throughout Banff, Canmore, Lake Louise, and Kananaskis that I will share with you.

Finding a location that reflects who you are and what you love doing together can completely transform your wedding day. If hiking is your thing, let’s hike. If you’d rather trade the trail for a helicopter and land somewhere completely remote, let’s do that. If you want an intimate mountain experience that’s more accessible for your family and friends, there are beautiful options for that too.

I always say choosing your locations can be one of the hardest decisions you’ll make—not because there aren’t enough incredible places, but because there are so many.

2. Pick Your Date or Time of Year

Every season brings a completely different kind of beauty to the Canadian Rockies.

Summer means long days, alpine wildflowers, and access to many of the higher-elevation trails. Fall brings golden larches and crisp mountain air. Winter transforms the Rockies into a snow-covered wonderland, while spring brings its own quiet beauty as the mountains begin to wake up.

Weather, trail access, road conditions, sunrise and sunset times, and seasonal activities can all influence what is possible on your elopement day.

Start by thinking about the season that feels most like you. Then we can look at what locations and experiences will be accessible during that time of year.

And remember – there isn’t a “best” season to elope in the Rockies. There’s simply the season that feels right for your adventure.

3. Choose a Banff Elopement Photographer

Your photographer isn’t simply there to take beautiful photographs. When you’re planning an adventure elopement somewhere as vast and unpredictable as the Rockies, having someone who knows the area can make an enormous difference.

I’ll help you with location suggestions, timelines, logistics, lighting, and ideas for how to structure your day so you can experience as much of the mountains as possible without feeling rushed.

4. Book Your Banff Elopement Vendors

Depending on the kind of elopement you’re planning, there are several vendors you may want to consider. An officiant, florist, hair and makeup artist, accommodation, transportation, catering, or restaurant reservations – all of these vendors are important to consider, and many may be required depending on the type of elopement you choose.

No two couples are the same, and no two elopements should be either. While I do help plan custom elopements for every one of my couples, I do offer all-inclusive elopement packages with a variety of options to let you customize how your day looks.

5. Plan Your Travel to Banff – For Couples Travelling from Further Away

Once the bigger pieces come together, it’s time to think about the logistics of getting here.

Depending on your plans, you may need to arrange flights, accommodation, car rentals, transportation, and other activities around your elopement.

Banff, Canmore, Lake Louise, and Kananaskis are incredibly popular destinations, particularly during the summer and fall months. Accommodation and other local vendors can book well in advance, so I recommend making your reservations sooner rather than later. If you already know you want a particular accommodation or adventure experience, I would recommend not hesitating to book as the Rockies have a way of filling up quickly.

6. Apply for Your Alberta Marriage License and Permits

The legal process for getting married varies depending on where you’re from and where you’re getting married. If you’re planning to legally marry in Alberta, make sure you understand the requirements for obtaining your marriage license and completing your legal ceremony. You may also need permits depending on where you plan to hold your ceremony or event. National Parks, Provincial Parks, and municipalities can all have different rules surrounding weddings, photography, group sizes, and special activities. As a Canmore local, I can help you understand what permits are required and how to get them sorted out in advance of your trip to the Rockies.

It’s one of those less glamorous parts of planning an elopement—but getting the details sorted ahead of time means you can arrive on your wedding day knowing everything is taken care of.

Please also note that if you’re getting married legally in Alberta, you will require two witnesses for your marriage license. These can be family members or friends who are joining in on the adventure. If it’s just the two of you? I’m more than happy to be one of your witnesses, and can work with you to find a second witness and to make everything official. Your witnesses don’t have to be part of the adventure unless you want them to be. Your wedding can be as intimate or as inclusive as you choose.

7. Prepare Your Adventure Elopement Essentials

Think about how you’ll actually be spending your wedding day when choosing what to wear. Gear like your wedding dress, suit, rings, vow books, boots, layers, adventure gear – it all plays a part in making the day a comfortable and successful experience.

If you’re hiking to your ceremony or portrait location, you’ll want clothing that allows you to move comfortably. A dress with some flexibility and lightweight layers can make a huge difference when you’re navigating mountain trails.

If you’re planning a longer hike, consider how much you’ll be carrying and how far you’ll be travelling on foot. And don’t forget about the practical things – comfortable footwear, warm layers, rain protection, water, and anything else you might need for changing mountain conditions.

Your wedding attire can absolutely be luxurious and beautiful while still being adventure-ready.

And give yourself plenty of time for fittings and alterations. The last thing you want is to be worrying about your outfit when you should be enjoying your day.

8. Your Elopement Timeline

Now comes one of my favourite parts: designing the actual experience. There are endless ways to structure an elopement day, and your timeline should be built around what matters most to you.

Maybe you want to wake up before sunrise, hike into the mountains, exchange vows with the first light hitting the peaks, and spend the afternoon exploring somewhere new.

Maybe you want a slow morning together, a beautiful picnic, a helicopter flight, and sunset portraits overlooking the Rockies.

Or maybe you want to spend the entire day adventuring with no real agenda beyond finding somewhere incredible and being together.

Your timeline should leave room to breathe.

Sunrise and sunset offer some of the most beautiful and dramatic light in the mountains, so I’ll often recommend building your day around these windows when possible.

But beautiful photographs are only one part of the experience. The goal is to create a day that feels incredible while you’re living it, not simply one that looks incredible afterward.

9. Create Your Packing List

A few months before your elopement, I recommend creating a detailed packing list.

Think beyond the obvious wedding essentials and consider everything you might need for a day in the mountains: layers, comfortable footwear, water, snacks, rain gear, sunscreen, medications, vow books, rings, and any personal details you want to bring along.

Mountain weather can change quickly, so being prepared is especially important when you’re spending your wedding day outdoors.
